Based on Humayun Ahmed's eponymous book Daruchini Dwip also generated huge interest due to its male lead winning the part via the television talent show, Super Star'06.

The film’s narrative focuses on a proposed trip to Daruchini Dwip (St. Martin's Island) by a group of adventurous university students. Each traveller’s desire to join the group is questioned by either family or society’s expectations. Will the group be able to overcome these obstacles and realise their dreams, symbolised by the island trip?

Shubhro (played by talent-show winner, Momo), is sole heir to a rich family. He has little experience of the reality of life beyond the material comforts of his home. His father is suspicious of the trip and tries to prevent his son joining the group. In the meantime, Jori’s family is set on marrying her off to an affluent groom, in opposition to her wishes.  Will their paths cross? Looks likely…

An irascible seventy year-old, Mr. Sobhan lives alone in his villa. To all intents and purposes, his family is a beacon of respectability and success; both his daughters are married and living in Dhaka city with their husbands, and his son is an exceptionally brilliant student of Physics at Dhaka university.

The only hitch is that none of his children visit him. His fierce temper scares them and his unpredictable behaviour ensures they give him a wide berth. His scheme to force them to visit? Mr Sobhan spreads the rumour that he is dead!

Inevitably, his plan works but the family is confused when a dancer, Ranjana, also turns up at the reunion. Nobody seems to know why. Could Sobhan’s absent-minded son shed some light on the mystery?

This gentle comedy of family ties pokes fun at human pomposity and provides a welcome feel-good factor resolution.

In depicting the ‘developing world’ on celluloid, it is hard to avoid cliché. However, basic human empathy still fuels our desire to see images and hear stories.

`The Cycle’ follows the lives of two brothers, Afsu and Shamsu, their wives and two sons eking out a living grinding mustard seeds. They own a hand-mill to carry out the task - a crude machine which extracts oil from seeds. The machine is powered by an ox tethered to a yoke. If a family is so deprived that it cannot afford an ox, they must power the mill themselves. Only the poorest of the poor need resort to this hardship.

In this tough existence, both families’ lives are characterised more by sorrow than joy. Their predicament seems unaltered until it takes a sad turn for the worst. Their only ox is stolen. Undaunted the younger generation decides that they will turn the mill themselves. Despite the implications it has for the family’s standing the brothers perform this selfless act with immense dignity.

A humbling view of life at its most fragile
