A tale of one man's obsession with American citizenship, and the lengths he will go to get it. Hugely topical, the film was shot in the USA, and takes place in Chicago.
A Bangladeshi immigrant, who came to the USA in his youth, waits 18 years in the hope of getting a green card. His only wish is to live a worry-free life in the country of his dreams. Despite hard work and spending all the money he earns on obtaining legal citizenship, his dream eludes him. He eventually marries an African-American girl in a cynical arrangement entitling him to residency, but she blackmails him.
The pressure and stress of his situation lead to his physical and emotional disintegration. Can he overcome the cruelty of his experience and face an uncertain future? |

This intriguing story of love beyond death is set in the real-life Schooner Hotel on the Northumberland coast. No ordinary location this: the Poltergeist Society has twice named the hotel ‘Most Haunted Hotel in Great Britain’. The room deemed to be the most haunted is… Room 28.
The story revolves around the killing of a 10 year-old boy and his parents in Room no 28. It is believed that they revisit the hotel as ghosts.
Dark corridors, strange creaks, cold spots and the eerie feeling of being watched - Alnmouth's Schooner Hotel is the perfect backdrop for this eerie tale. It might make you shiver!

The 2007 filming in Tower Hamlets of Sarah Gavron’s adaptation of the Monica Ali novel was controversial. Rows erupted over the appropriateness of making a film which, amongst other things, touched upon the radicalising of young Muslims.
At the tender age of seventeen, Nazneen’s (Chatterjee) life is turned upside down. After an arranged marriage to an older man, she exchanges her Bangladeshi village home for a block of flats in London’s East End. In this new world, pining for her home and her sister, she struggles to make sense of her existence – and to do her duty to her husband. A man of inflated ideas (and stomach), he sorely tests her compliance. But Nazneen submits, until the day that Karim, a hot-headed local man, bursts into her life.
‘Gavron's movie finds an unfashionably gentle, human optimism […] and a sympathetic performance from Chatterjee makes it plausible.’
